FAQs for Families

Have a question? Let us help!

I live in Southeastern NC, does my child qualify for services from Welcome Home Angel?

Welcome Home Angel serves children ages 4 to 21 in Southeastern North Carolina who face significant challenges at home due to chronic illness, injury, or developmental disabilities. Every application is reviewed individually, as each child’s needs are unique. If you believe your child may qualify, or know someone in need, we encourage you to apply HERE.

What if I don't live in Southeastern, NC?

We’re so glad you asked! Welcome Home Angel offers a continuum of services for different locations, ages, and needs, ensuring everyone can access a space that promotes comfort, independence, and well-being. If you live outside Southeastern NC, we invite you to explore our Bedroom in a Box and virtual design services to see how we can support your family. We encourage you to nominate someone today!

What do I do if a nomination has been submitted for my family?

Once a nomination is received, our Projects Team will review it to determine initial eligibility. If it meets our criteria, you’ll be invited to complete a full Family Application and submit all necessary documentation. While a medical referral is not required to apply, a Medical Eligibility Form (to be completed by a member of your child’s care team) will be required to submit as part of the application process. This form will be sent to you by one of our team members after a nomination is submitted.

What happens now that my application has been submitted?

Once your application is submitted, the Welcome Home Angel team will begin a thorough review. During this phase, we may reach out if additional information is needed.

If your child appears to meet our eligibility criteria, we’ll contact you to schedule an in-home assessment. This review and scheduling process may take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the details of your application, funding, and current project schedule.

If your child’s project is approved and determined to be a good fit, a Design Team will be assigned to meet with you and explore your family’s needs, preferences, and hopes for the space in more detail.

What does the overall process look like?

Once your child’s project is approved, a Design Team Leader will be assigned to guide the transformation. A member of the Welcome Home Angel team and your Design Leader will meet with you and your child to learn more about your needs and begin developing a personalized work plan.

After the plan is finalized and approved by your family, we’ll begin organizing the details behind the scenes—this includes assembling a team of trade professionals and volunteers, securing materials, and sometimes fundraising to support the project.

Next, your Design Team will schedule an anticipated “Big Reveal Day”—the exciting moment when your child’s new space will be unveiled! Please note, this date may shift slightly due to construction timelines or unforeseen circumstances. We may also ask that your family make arrangements to be out of the home during certain phases of the project to ensure safety and preserve the surprise.

At that point, your job is simple: trust the process, let us work our magic—and don’t worry; we promise to clean up any mess we make along the way!

What is a Design Team?

A Design Team is the group of dedicated volunteers who bring your child’s dream space to life. This team plans, designs, and executes the transformation in close collaboration with your family.

Design Teams are made up of professional interior designers or passionate community members who are excited to reimagine your child’s space in a way that is both beautiful and functional.

These incredible volunteers are at the heart of what we do!

What is a Design Plan?

A design plan is a detailed proposal created by your Design Team that outlines all the planned updates and improvements to your child’s space—and, when appropriate, their sibling’(s) rooms as well.

The plan is carefully developed with input from both medical and design professionals to ensure it aligns with Welcome Home Angel’s mission and supports your child’s specific needs for comfort, accessibility, and overall well-being.

Once it’s approved, the work plan is shared with your family. You’ll have the chance to review it, offer feedback, and suggest any changes. Your voice is an essential part of the process and we want to make sure the final design truly reflects your child’s needs and personality.

What am I required to do for the project?

Your main responsibility is simply to prepare the space so our team can get to work. This may include light cleaning, organizing, or decluttering before the project begins. Once the transformation is underway, you can relax as our volunteers will handle everything from there.

The most important thing we ask is that you stay in touch with your Design Team for scheduling. We’ll coordinate closely with you to find times that work best for your family as we plan visits and bring your child’s new space to life.

Some families also choose to share their personalized donation page with friends and loved ones. While never required, this can be a wonderful way for your community to support the project and be part of your child’s transformation.

Why is my child's project taking so long?

Every transformation is thoughtfully planned to ensure it meets your child’s unique needs, and that takes time. From securing the right permits and approvals to coordinating with our team of professionals and volunteers, we want to get every detail just right.

We also work hard to make sure the necessary funding is in place before we begin. Larger renovations, like bathrooms or structural changes, can take several weeks or even a few months to complete.

We understand waiting can be hard, but please know that every step is taken with care, and the end result will be worth it.

Why is funding essential for making WHA projects possible?

Funding is at the foundation of every Welcome Home Angel transformation. It allows us to purchase materials, access specialized equipment, and partner with skilled professionals who help bring each child’s space to life safely, beautifully, and thoughtfully.

Even after a project is approved, we must secure full funding before work can begin. Without it, timelines may shift, but rest assured that we are committed to delivering every project to the highest standard.

To support this process, each family receives a personalized Angel Donation Page, a tool to share with friends, family, and community members who want to be part of the journey. Every gift helps us move one step closer to completing your child’s dream space.
